Postdoctoral Position Management Phd in Geometric Reconstruction of Micro-sensors

The Management Phd purpose of this proposal post-doc is to generalize the use of these sensors in more complex geometric reconstruction problems.

Each of these sensors provide access to the orientation (ie normal direction) from the surface of which has been placed, but does not provide information about absolute position. The first Management Phd objective is to decide concrete cases where a limited number of measurements is possible to reconstruct an approximation of the underlying surface. This means imposing restrictions on both surfaces that are considered families as well as on how they should be sampled. Management PhD applications for a training fellowship in 2011-2012 are invited from postdoctoral scientists who are Australian nationals1, who intend to pursue a career in cancer research and wish to complete their training in those aspects of cancer research related to the Agency’s mission and of priority for the Cancer Council Australia: to coordinate and conduct both epidemiological and laboratory research into the causes and prevention of cancer. We are looking for three PhD candidates at the AASS Learning Systems Lab of Örebro University, Sweden. The respective positions will address the following topics:

(1) Active 3D Perception for a Robot Unloading Containers

Research in this project can include fusion of visual and 3D range information (RGB-D sensing), feature-based object detection, concepts for active sensing, modelling shape deformations, and integration into a compact, semantic 3D world model. State-of-the-art range sensors are available for the work, including novel TOF cameras and, of course, the Kinect sensor.

(2) Hybrid Automatic Planning for a Robot Unloading Containers

The aim of this PhD project will be on fast generation of safe and reliable sequences of actions to unload objects of different types, shapes, and weights from a container using a specialized robotic arm. Specific research questions may include exploration of suitable representations for symbolic and sub-symbolic constraints in a unified framework, fast planning of trajectories based on the hybrid representation, and reasoning about uncertainty in the perceptual knowledge about the objects to manipulate.

(3) Safe and Flexible Navigation for Long-Term Operation of Professional Service Robots in Dynamic Environments

Research in this project can address new self-localization methods for robust long-term operation of autonomous vehicles in dynamic environments; methods for smooth, collision-free navigation at high speeds in the presence of static and moving objects; detection and tracking humans; efficient path planning using traffic rule information; and execution monitoring under consideration of traffic rules.

The Materials & Engineering Research Institute (MERI) is a large and research active business within Sheffield Hallam University. MERI also excels in generating income through consultancy activities including failure analysis, quality control and new product development. Sheaf Solutions is a consultancy business within MERI which delivers process modelling and simulation consultancy to a range of public sector and industrial clients. We are seeking to strengthen the Sheaf Solutions team through the recruitment of a highly motivated individual to deliver consultancy to local and national clients.


The role will require a flexible approach in order to respond to the diverse needs of industry. With some industrial experience, you will be very capable in the understanding of the application of process modelling and simulation to industrial processes and will be able to supplement the work of other MERI staff by providing consultancy on the optimisation of engineering processes using software such as Arena, and you will have significant experience of work or research in associated areas, such as Lean Operations.



A background of having worked for other regional projects or within Government funded schemes would be an advantage.

The role will include talking to regional companies, generating new contacts and delivering work, and report writing.

You will ideally be educated to postgraduate level (or with equivalent experience) and with significant experience in a research and development environment. You must have excellent IT, communications and written skills and be able to perform individually or as part of a team where necessary.
